Online Backup - An Update

Last week I told you about a great online backup service that I’ve started to use. For me, it’s important to have the reassurance that all my important data is securely backed up away from my office, and online backup was the only way for me to go.

For over a year I’ve been paying $70 per month to a UK company, with just 25 Gb of storage available to me. That’s proved not to be enough space for me. I still had 30 Gb of other stuff (my eLibrary, for example) which wasn’t backed up.

This new service I’ve started to use gives unrestricted backup space - and for 50 bucks a year - less than I pay in a month for my other service!

When I wrote to you last week, I was still taking advantage of my 15-day trial off’er. Yesterday, I went ahead and paid my year’s subscription for the service.

So what’s my verdict so far?
Not everything is perfect. For example, the files are not compressed when they are backed up, so the my initial backup of 20 Gb took several days. The system works in the background, only when your PC is inactive, so it doesn’t slow your system down. But time isn’t that important, and subsequently, any files added to the selected backup folders don’t take too long at all.

A couple of times when I tried to restore a file to another location, the software stopped responding. However, the company’s support system is very slick, and the problem was resolved.

Overall, I’m very pleased with this backup system, and I suggest that you take up their off’er of a 15-day free trial. But don’t do this if:

  • You don’t have a broadband connection

  • Your ISP caps your monthly data transfer at less than 30 Gb

  • You’re not prepared to leave your PC running 24/7 (although rebooting doesn’t cause a problem.

You can sign up for your 15-day trial here:

Don’t take a chance with your valuable data!
